Bearing: An Essential Component in Industrial Machinery

1.
Bearings can be divided into sliding bearings and rolling bearings, each with distinct characteristics.

For ball bearing manufacturers, bearing wholesale suppliers, and custom gearbox manufacturers, understanding the foundational role of bearings in machinery is key to delivering performance-driven components.

Bearings can be categorized into two main types: sliding bearings and rolling bearings, each serving different industrial requirements. Their primary functions include reducing friction, guiding rotational movement, and bearing loads. In mechanical applications—from custom gearboxes to high-precision assemblies—bearings serve two critical roles. First, they reduce friction between the rotating shaft and its support, enhancing energy efficiency and enabling smoother, more reliable operation. Second, they provide support and positioning, helping maintain alignment and prolonging the life of the surrounding components.

From an engineering perspective, the type of friction involved determines whether rod end bearing suppliers or tapered roller bearing suppliers are consulted for specific applications. Sliding bearings, which rely on surface contact, demand precise material selection. While they offer quiet operation, their higher starting resistance makes them ideal for low-speed, high-load environments—often seen in large industrial gearboxes provided by custom gearbox suppliers.

According to Grand View Research, when segmenting the global market into ball bearings, roller bearings, and sliding bearings, ball bearings (a critical product line for most bearing wholesale businesses) accounted for the largest share—47.37% of the total market revenue in 2022. This dominance reflects the widespread reliance on ball bearing manufacturers for high-performance, low-friction components across global industries.

2. Sliding and rolling bearings each have advantages and disadvantages based on their characteristics.

Performance perspective: Rolling bearings excel in operational performance, with lower damping and power consumption, as well as higher precision. Sliding bearings, due to their larger contact area and uniformity, offer greater resistance to high-impact loads and carrying capacity, making them ideal for applications requiring high resistance to oscillating motion damage.

Economic perspective: Self-lubricating sliding bearings, the most widely used type, are more cost-effective. Compared to rolling bearings that require lubrication, they often need little to no lubrication, resulting in lower maintenance costs.

3. Bearings are widely used across industries, with significant market growth potential.

Bearings are widely used across industries and represent a key component in mechanical systems, presenting significant market growth potential for global ball bearing manufacturers, rod end bearing suppliers, and custom gearbox manufacturers.

Bearing Industry Chain Breakdown

Upstream: This stage primarily involves raw materials such as bearing steel, modified plastics, and industrial ceramics, alongside essential components like rings, rolling elements, and cages. These materials and parts serve as the foundation for precision bearing systems, whether supplied for bearing wholesale or integrated into solutions by tapered roller bearing suppliers.

Midstream: The midstream is dominated by international ball bearing manufacturers and high-precision bearing producers, with high-end manufacturing technologies largely monopolized by companies from Sweden, Germany, Japan, and the United States. However, Chinese manufacturers—some of whom double as custom gearbox suppliers or component makers—are making steady progress through R&D investments. For instance, Tianma produces its own rollers, while Wuzhou Spring produces both rings and rollers, reducing reliance on external bearing wholesale networks and strengthening supply chain control.

Downstream: Bearing applications span a wide range of industries, including automotive, home appliances, wind power, robotics, and precision gear systems. This opens opportunities for custom gearbox manufacturers and rod end bearing suppliers to tailor bearing components to high-performance or specialized motion applications.

Automotive & Wind Power Drive Bearing Demand

The automotive sector remains the primary application for bearing usage. In 2020, it accounted for 37.40% of total bearing application revenue. Other key sectors included home appliances (12.40%) and electric motors (10.60%). For custom gearbox manufacturers, automotive bearings—especially ball and tapered roller types—form a critical part of transmission and power systems.

Meanwhile, the wind power sector is becoming increasingly important, especially in China. Our estimates suggest that China’s wind power bearing market—primarily for main shaft bearings, yaw/pitch bearings, and gearbox bearings—reached RMB 12.634 billion in 2020. Given Toubao Research’s total bearing market estimate of RMB 289 billion that year, wind power represented about 4.37% of all applications. This trend reflects an opportunity for tapered roller bearing suppliers and custom gearbox suppliers to serve large-scale, high-load renewable energy demands.

Global Market Outlook for Bearings

The global bearing industry offers vast potential for growth, especially for ball bearing manufacturers and bearing wholesale exporters operating across multiple regions. According to Grand View Research, the global bearing market reached $120.98 billion in 2023 and is projected to grow to $226.6 billion by 2030 at a 9% CAGR. Notably, the Asia-Pacific region held a 40% share in 2023, with China acting as a major driver. By 2030, the Asia-Pacific market alone is expected to exceed $98.2 billion—offering growth opportunities for rod end bearing suppliers, custom gearbox manufacturers, and OEM distributors throughout the supply chain.

China's Bearing Industry: Rebound and Opportunity

Despite a downturn in 2019 caused by decreased domestic demand—especially lower automotive production—and export limitations amid U.S.-China trade tensions, China’s bearing industry rebounded significantly. In 2021, revenue recovered to RMB 227.8 billion, a year-over-year growth of 18%, fueled by national defense procurement and growing demand for wind power localization. This rebound benefits not only local ball bearing manufacturers, but also niche tapered roller bearing suppliers and custom gearbox suppliers supporting the clean energy sector.

International bearing manufacturers dominate, while China's industry accelerates.

The global bearing market is largely monopolized by eight major international players: Sweden's SKF, Japan's NSK, JTEKT, NTN, NMB, and NACHI, the U.S.'s Timken, and Germany's Schaeffler. In 2022, these eight companies held a 75% global market share (by revenue), while Chinese manufacturers accounted for only 20%. China's bearing market is fragmented, with Wanxiang Qianchao, Renben Group, and Luoyang Bearing reporting revenues of RMB 14.322 billion, RMB 9.121 billion, and RMB 5.108 billion, respectively, in 2021—compared to China's total industry revenue of RMB 227.8 billion that year.

Robotic Bearings: Incremental Demand from Humanoid Robots

Bearings are critical joint components in humanoid robots, primarily used in reducers, ball screws, and motors. The types of bearings vary depending on the core components. Tesla's Optimus Gen-2 humanoid robot demonstration highlights the long-term potential of this market. The development of humanoid robots is expected to drive demand for bearings in reducers, screws, and motors.

Reducer Bearings: Primarily crossed roller bearings and flexible bearings in harmonic reducers.
Reducers are the core power transmission mechanisms in humanoid robots, analogous to human joints. They match speeds and transmit torque between prime movers and actuators. Major types include precision planetary reducers, harmonic reducer bearings, and RV reducer bearings. Tesla's Optimus uses 14 harmonic reducers and 12 planetary reducers, with reducers accounting for 17% of its total value.

Humanoid robot development is driving bearing demand growth:

  1. Reducers:

   - Harmonic reducers: Crossed roller bearings, flexible bearings.

   - Planetary reducers: Deep groove ball bearings, needle roller bearings.

   - RV reducers: Angular contact ball bearings, tapered roller bearings, cylindrical roller bearings, deep groove ball bearings.

  1. Ball screws: Deep groove ball bearings, four-point contact ball bearings (for planetary roller screws).
  2. Motors: Deep groove ball bearings, sliding bearings (for hollow-cup motors).

The rapid development of humanoid robots is expected to further increase bearing demand**. According to a January 15, 2024, report ("Humanoid Robots: Accelerating Development, Full-Scale Advance"), based on Tesla Optimus component estimates, when humanoid robot sales reach the million-unit level, the market for planetary roller screws and harmonic reducers will exceed RMB 10 billion, with significant growth potential for hollow-cup motors and planetary reducers. Consequently, bearing demand for these components will also expand substantially.
